Mood Board

Good afternoon! A little bit ago, I posted a blog going into and analyzing one of my favorite movies: The Grand Budapest Hotel. Today, I had the opportunity to create a mood board for the movie using photos that evoke the style of The Grand Budapest. This was a bit challenging for me, as the movie is unique in its design, but I believe that my finishing product showcases the film's general mood and its settings.

The color pink dominates the majority of the shots and scenes in the film, especially when the scenes take place within The Grand Budapest itself, which is entirely made of different shades of pink both inside and out. Because of this, I felt it necessary to show this striking and important detail with my mood board, hence the large amount and emphasis on the color.

The movie takes place in the early 1900s, with the setting taking place in the fictional country of Zubrowka, which derives heavily from old German architecture. With this in mind, I used many images of German towns and churches to show the Vintage look that the atmosphere held throughout the film. I also chose pictures of rooms from various hotels that match the style of the film and its many scenes, as a way to further detail the board.

Additionally, I attempted to include as many photos as possible showing snowy and rocky mountains, which the film showcases heavily, with the hotel sitting at the very top of a tall cliff. I also used those images to showcase a classical steam engine train and a gondola, which are seen throughout the movie and are some of the main sources of transportation used within the film.

Along with this, one of the biggest and most eye catching photos I used in my mood board is a photo of The Don Cesar, which is located in St. Pete Beach Florida. The similarity between The Don Cesar and The Grand Budapest is undeniable, with their indisputable resemblance making one wonder if The Budapest within the film takes any inspiration from the real-life Don Cesar hotel.

Lastly, some of the photos used within the mood board actually focus on a bakery, with two photos showcasing delicious baked goods and another showcasing a little pink pastry shop. This is because an ongoing tool that is used throughout the film to continue the plot is the baked goods of a famous bakery within the movie world, Mendel's. Not only is the pastry shop an essential part of the film, with it being brought back up multiple times, but it is how The Grand Budapest introduces the love interest of the film, Clotilde.
